Removing a red wine stain
Difficulty: Easy · Time: approx. 15 minutes
A red wine stain looks dramatic but can often be saved – if you're quick. The fresher the stain, the better your chances.
The biggest mistake is rubbing it dry or treating it with hot water – that sets the colour. Important: blot first, don't rub, then work from the outside inwards.
What you'll need
- Absorbent cloth or paper towel
- Salt (for fresh stains)
- Sparkling mineral water
- Optional: bile soap or washing-up liquid
- Cold water
Step by step
- 1
Blot
Dab the stain immediately with an absorbent cloth – from the outside inwards, do NOT rub. This lifts as much wine as possible.
- 2
Salt or sparkling water
Fresh stain: cover thickly with salt, which soaks up the wine. Alternatively pour on sparkling mineral water and keep blotting.
- 3
Rinse with cold water
Rinse the spot from the back with COLD water – hot water sets the colour.
- 4
Pre-treat and wash
If the stain remains: rub in some bile soap or washing-up liquid, let it sit briefly, then wash normally (as hot as the fabric allows).
- 5
Check before drying
Only tumble-dry or hang once the stain is GONE – otherwise heat makes any residue permanent.

- Does white wine help against red?
- The myth persists but does little – you just create a second stain. Salt, sparkling water and cold water are more reliable.
- What about dried-in stains?
- Harder but not hopeless: soak in cold water with some bile soap (30–60 min), then wash. Repeat if needed.
