Loose window handle – how to tighten it

Difficulty: Easy · Time: approx. 5 minutes

A loose window handle starts with a slight wobble, and at some point it almost spins along loosely – which is when you start wondering where this handle even has screws. The answer: they exist, they're just well hidden.

Two perfectly ordinary screws sit under the oval cover plate at the base of the handle. The cover is only clipped on and can be rotated – no prying, no special tools. The whole repair takes less than two minutes.

What you'll need

  • Phillips screwdriver
  • A cloth or rubber glove for a better grip on the cover plate
  • Ruler or tape measure (only if you end up needing a new handle)
  • Optional: new window handle (43 mm hole spacing, a few euros)

Step by step

  1. 1

Rotate the cover plate 90 degrees

Grip the oval cover plate right at the base of the handle with two fingers and rotate it 90 degrees until it sits crossways. It's only clipped on – no tools needed and nothing to pry off. If it's stiff, a cloth or rubber glove gives you extra grip.

  2. 2

    Tighten the screws

Behind the cover, two screws appear at the top and bottom. Tighten both clockwise with the Phillips screwdriver until hand-tight – firm enough that nothing wobbles, but without force, or you'll strip the threads.

  3. 3

    Rotate the cover back

Turn the cover plate back to its upright starting position until it sits neatly over the screws. That's it – everything looks just like before.

  4. 4

    Test the handle

Move the handle through all its positions a few times. If it sits firmly again, you're done. If it still wobbles even though the screws are tight, the threads are stripped – then only a new handle will help.

  5. 5

    Replace the handle if needed

Unscrew both screws completely and pull the old handle with its square spindle out of the window. New handles almost always use the standard 43 mm hole spacing and only cost a few euros. Insert the new handle in the same position and screw it tight – done.

Frequently asked questions

The cover plate won't rotate – what now?
On older windows the plate is often stuck with paint or grime. A rubber glove for extra grip and gently rocking it back and forth almost always does the trick. Don't pry it off with a screwdriver – the plastic breaks easily.
The handle still wobbles after tightening – why?
Then the threads are stripped and the screws can't get a grip any more. In that case, replace the handle completely – thanks to the standardised 43 mm hole spacing, a new standard handle fits almost every window.
Does a new handle really fit any window?
Almost any: the 43 mm hole spacing has been the standard for decades. Just make sure the square spindle – the metal pin on the back – is long enough for your window frame. If in doubt, take the old handle to the hardware store to compare.
