Filling a hole in the wall

Difficulty: Easy · Time: approx. 30 minutes

Wall plug holes or small dents are quickly filled yourself. The actual work only takes minutes – most of the time is drying time between steps.

With a bit of filler, a spatula and fine sandpaper the spot becomes smooth again. Finish by painting over it so nothing shows.

What you'll need

  • Ready-mixed filler (e.g. from a tube)
  • A filling knife or small spatula
  • Fine sandpaper (grit ~120–180)
  • Damp sponge + cloth
  • Optional: a little wall paint + brush to paint over

Step by step

  1. 1

    Clean the hole

Remove loose bits, dust and old plug remnants from the hole. A clean, firm edge holds the filler better.

  2. 2

    Apply filler

Press the filler into the hole with the spatula and draw it smooth across the wall. Leave it slightly proud – sanding removes the excess.

  3. 3

    Let it dry

Let the filler dry fully (time is on the pack, often 1–4 hours). For deep holes, work in two thin layers.

  4. 4

    Sand smooth

Sand flush with the wall using fine sandpaper until you can no longer feel the spot. Wipe off dust with a damp sponge.

  5. 5

    Paint over

Prime if needed and paint over with wall paint. Paint slightly beyond the edge so the spot doesn't show through.

Frequently asked questions

How long does filler need to dry?
Depending on product and layer thickness, about 1–4 hours. Better to wait longer – damp filler can't be sanded cleanly.
Why does the spot show through after painting?
Filler absorbs paint differently than the wall. A thin primer on the filled spot prevents the dull patch.
