Tightening a loose door handle
Difficulty: Easy · Time: approx. 10 minutes
A wobbling door handle is usually harmless: over time a screw or the grub screw on the handle works loose. You just need to find it and tighten it – in most cases that's done in five minutes.
There are two designs: visible screws in the rose (the plate behind the handle) or hidden fixings where you loosen a small grub screw or the rose itself. Both work without special tools.
What you'll need
- Screwdriver (Phillips and flat-head)
- Small Allen key (for grub screws)
- Optional: a thin spatula to pry off the rose
- Optional: a new spindle if worn
Step by step
- 1
Identify the design
Look at the rose behind the handle. If you see two screws, it's the simple type. If it's all smooth, the fixing is hidden – look on the handle neck for a small grub screw.
- 2
Tighten visible screws
Tighten the two screws in the rose evenly, crosswise. Not by force – firm but not over-tightened, or you'll strip the thread.
- 3
Tighten the grub screw
On the hidden type, tighten the small grub screw on the handle neck with the Allen key. Seated on the flat of the spindle, it holds the handle rock-solid again.
- 4
Open a hidden rose
If there's no grub screw, gently pry off the rose with a thin spatula or unscrew it – the actual fixing screws are underneath. Tighten them and refit the rose.
- 5
Check it works
Press the handle a few times. It should spring back cleanly and no longer wobble. If it doesn't spring back, the spring or the spindle is to blame (see FAQ).

- Where is the screw if I can't see one?
- Then it's hidden: either a small grub screw on the handle neck (Allen key) or under the rose, which can be pried or unscrewed off.
- The handle droops and won't spring back – why?
- Usually the return spring in the handle or lock is tired, or the spindle no longer sits properly. A new spring or spindle fixes it.
- Both sides are loose – do I have to dismantle everything?
- Often it's enough to retighten the through-screws on both sides. If it still wobbles, take the handles off and check how the spindle sits.
