Removing super glue from skin – without tearing
Difficulty: Easy · Time: approx. 15 minutes
One moment of inattention and your fingers are stuck together or there's super glue on your skin. First of all: stay calm. On unbroken skin the glue isn't dangerous – it only gets tricky if you try to rip the spot apart by force.
Super glue (cyanoacrylate) can almost always be loosened gently with warm soapy water, some fat and a little patience. And even if a bit remains: your skin renews itself constantly, and the film grows off by itself within a day or two.
What you'll need
- Warm water with washing-up liquid or soap
- Cooking oil or margarine
- Acetone-based nail polish remover and cotton pads
- Rich hand cream for afterwards
- Optional: pumice stone or a mild scrub
Step by step
- 1
Stay calm – don't rip anything off
Never pull glued skin apart by force – the top layer of skin can tear. Everything from here on happens gently and with patience.
- 2
Warm soapy water soak
Hold the area in warm water with washing-up liquid or soap for 5 to 10 minutes. The glue softens – then work it off bit by bit with gentle rolling and rubbing.
- 3
Massage in oil or margarine
Massage cooking oil or margarine into the glued spot. The fat creeps under the cyanoacrylate's grip, and the glue rubs off much more easily afterwards.
- 4
Acetone as the strongest option
Dab acetone-based nail polish remover onto the glue with a cotton pad – but only on unbroken skin. Acetone is very drying, so apply a good hand cream afterwards.
- 5
Separating stuck fingers
If two fingers are glued together, gently roll them against each other in warm soapy water until the bond releases. Never yank them apart.
- 6
Let the rest simply grow off
You don't have to remove every last bit: residue grows off with your skin within a day or two. A mild scrub or a pumice stone speeds that up.

- Is super glue on skin toxic?
- Not on unbroken skin – the glue cures into a harmless film. The only real concerns are mucous membranes, eyes and open wounds, plus ripping it off by force – that's when the doctor rule from the warning applies.
- How long until the glue comes off by itself?
- The top layer of skin renews itself constantly. The glue film is usually gone on its own after one or two days – hand cream, a scrub or a pumice stone speed things up.
- What if glue has dripped onto my clothes?
- Let it cure first and carefully pick off the bulk. On sturdy fabrics you can treat the residue locally with acetone-based nail polish remover – test on a hidden spot first; delicate items should go to the dry cleaner.
